Will GB3SO have to close down after 30 years?

The answer is "not necessarily!"

Fortunately the group have been offered the services of a professional aerial rigger "at cost", so at a special meeting of the group Committee held on March 18th 2009, the decision in principle was taken, by a majority vote, to begin the process of bringing GB3SO back to full service as the group currently holds sufficient funds to do so based on available information.

There are several stages to the progress: firstly we have to secure the site for the future, this will involve expense of around £500 for legal fees and an annual rent of £100, subject to confirmation.

We then will have to obtain quotations for the necessary new aerials - due to the nature of the site these will have to be commercial quality items - and new feeder.

Consideration then needs to be given to future running costs.  Apart from the rent, there will be maintenance costs with the aerials bearing in mind that we cannot do the work ourselves as a group - professional riggers will have to be called in each time there is a problem.

A decision was made at the AGM to progress the refurbishment of GB3SO up to a maximum cost of £1300 plus VAT.  The next stage is for the aerial riggers to carry out a site survey, risk assessment and supply a quotation for replacement aerials and feeder if required.  Watch this space!

The Fenland Repeater Group operates two Amateur Radio Repeaters in Lincolnshire;
